One of the greatest things about sewing is the opportunity to express yourself, be creative, and show your unique style.

I read a great quote (unfortunately I didn’t write down the author in my journal) part of which stated, “the problem with many human systems and organizations is that they… promote unity to the extent that the individual becomes a member of the herd and loses himself”.

Any of us who have gone to school as a child, can understand this statement. How sad it is that some kids get so heavily influenced by peer pressure that they lose themselves, and their ability to celebrate their own special uniqueness.

Sewing can provide an awesome opportunity for kids/all people to step out of the box and be themselves.

Encourage all of your kids to find a way to place their own mark on what they are making. It can be using a different colored thread for a top stitch, adding a piece of fringe or rick rack, sewing a zigzag stitch instead of straight ones.

If you are following a pattern, find a way to add something to the directions. By doing this not only are you encouraging them to be themselves, you are also helping them to expand their creativity and to not be afraid to try something new.

Some great ways for beginners to do something different and special, is by buying a plain colored t shirt, and letting them add some lace on the sleeves or at the bottom of the shirt. Young kids that can’t sew straight, can sew zigzag stitches in different colors all over the bottom of a shirt.

We enjoy giving a special touch to some of our clothes we buy. Especially adding things to our jeans and shorts. The main thing you are wanting them to learn, is that there is no right or wrong with creativity.

An opportunity for each of you to work together on completing a project, and each of you sharing, presenting, and appreciating each other’s unique addition to the design.

Sometimes, as authority figures, we can get lost in having everyone follow the rules exactly, that we miss opportunities for these little ones to show us new ways to see and do things. My girls have taught me completely new ways of putting something together, through their own unique sewing style.

Sewing Class : An Opportunity Beyond Sewing

There is an amazing opportunity that comes from sewing whether you’re working with your own children or somebody else’s. It’s the opportunity to give a gift that can last a lifetime, and benefits both the child and yourself.

Here is a sad research finding, from 1998.

“Research show that stay-at-home moms spend about 30 minutes a day conversing with their kids, and mothers who work outside the home spend fewer than 11 minutes. Now, if we assume that half of that time the parent is doing the talking, listening time drops to 15 minutes for the stay-at-home mom and 5.5 minutes for the working mom.” (Sharon Jaynes, Being A Great Mom, Raising Great Kids, pg.47)

Considering all of the technology that has been added to our lives, it would not surprise me if these numbers have decreased in the last 9 years.

Studies have proven, that a child’s success in school and later on in life, have more to do with someone showing that they are interested in who they are, believing in them, and loving them unconditionally than their IQ, household income, or outward appearance.

Here are examples of two such studies:

1. “A study was done in a classroom by Robert Rosenthal, a Harvard psychologist, and Lenore Jacobson, a San Francisco school principal…, in which a group of kindergarten through fifth-grade students was given a learning ability test. The next fall the new teachers were casually told the names of five or six children who were designated as “spurters.” The tests supposedly revealed that they had exceptional learning ability.

Unbeknownst to the teachers, the names of the “spurters” had been chosen randomly. At the end of the school year, all the students were retested. The pupils whom the teachers thought had the most potential had gained fifteen to twenty-seven IQ points. Plus, the teachers described these children as happier, more curious, more affectionate, and having a better chance of success in later life than the average student. But the only change in that school year from the one before was the teachers’ attitude. Because the teachers expected more of certain students, those children came to expect more of themselves.” (Sharon Jaynes, Being A Great Mom, Raising Great Kids, pg.128)

2. “A study was conducted on two hundred boys from the Baltimore slums to predict their future success. Each boy’s evaluation was the same: ‘He hasn’t got a chance.’ Twenty-five years later, a follow-up study was done on the same boys. Of the 180 men located, 176 were successful lawyers, doctors, or businessmen. When asked to what they attributed their success, each mentioned a particular teacher’s name.

The teacher was still alive, so the researchers sought her out and asked the old but alert lady what magic formula she had used to pull these boys from the slums into successful achievement. The teacher’s eyes sparkled, and her lips broke into a gentle smile. ‘It’s really very simple. I loved those boys.’”(Sharon Jaynes, Being A Great Mom, Raising Great Kids, pg.119)

This woman, in the second study, possibly had only one year to teach these kids, probably one hour a day, and that hour was spent with at least 20 other children. Yet her “love” effected their entire life!

Don’t think that just because your teaching classes, that are once a week and maybe for only a few months, that you can’t make a difference. You may be the only positive influence in those children’s lives, the only person that enjoys them, that finds something special about them, and that loves them unconditionally.

And if this is your own child your sewing with, take advantage of the time you are getting. During our times together pinning, pressing, sewing, cutting… we have talked about dreams, desires, likes, dislikes, wants, needs, heaven, good friends, bad friends, the true meaning of friends, the list goes on and on.

Get to know your kids whether they are yours or not. If your like me, you may need to jot down a note to yourself, after they leave, about something they like or an exciting thing they are going to do so you can remember to ask about it, the next time you see them.

Use open ended questions so they can’t just answer “yes” or “no”.

It is amazing how people will meet your expectations, whether they are high or low. You have the power to crush or lift up these precious people that have been placed in your path.

Sewing can go beyond the gift of creativity and teaching a skill, to providing an awesome opportunity to make a huge difference in someone’s life. Don’t miss out!

Teaching Sewing: Sewing Is Contagious

When the girls and I started getting the sewing bug, we began to notice an amazing phenomenon. It was highly contagious!! We would have friends over, and as the girls started playing with some of their completed projects, or their friends saw some lying around the house, it never failed, they would spend a portion of their time sewing together.

Now, you need to know that some of these completed projects that they presented were their own creations that had to be identified by the one who sewed it. This was especially the case with my 3 year old, at the time, in which almost everything fell into the three categories of purse, pillow, or blanket.

The point being, that it did not matter to their friends whether it was the beginning stages or an advanced case of sewing bug, they would catch the illness and immediately want to try the machines out.

This has made our sewing journey fantastic! It has been encouraging for the girls, myself, and for others. It never mattered how much we knew about sewing, what mattered is that we were doing it.

I would keep extra supplies around, still do, so that the girls could have their friends complete simple and quick projects while they were over. As we progressed in our abilities, we started having friends ask if they could sew with us on a regular basis.

Most of the time, we would make it into a social event where their moms would join us and we would have as afternoon of sewing and fellowship.

What was fun to watch, was that moms who felt like they didn’t have the time to teach their kids to sew, were making time and enjoying it, as well.

The social aspect of sewing is not only fun for everyone, it is also a great way to motivate and encourage your own children. Over the years of sewing my girls have settled into their thoughts on sewing. My oldest has a passion for sewing, spending several days a week sewing for pleasure and for a new business she started. My youngest daughter loves the fact that if she wants to sew she can whip out a dress in no time. She probably sews on average once a month on her own. However, when we have friends over, especially our sewing groups, she is right in the middle enjoying every moment.

So make sure you have some extra supplies on hand, so that you are ready when friends come to visit.

Extra Bonus: Another added benefit is you become the “fun” house. The place where you let kids try things they have always wanted to try (within reason, of course). You become the place where your children’s friends want to hang out. Through this, you get the opportunity to spend more time with their friends.

We bake, sew, bead. paint, sculpt… here at our house. I have one theory – “the messier you are, means the more fun you had”. Along with one Main Rule – “you have to clean up when you’re done”.

So once you catch the sewing disease, make sure you pass it on. It is highly contagious, and benefits ALL involved!
